Powerhouse Announces 27th Summer Season

Continuing its 27-year history of artistic excellence, Powerhouse Theater, a unique collaboration between Vassar College and New York Stage and Film, will run this summer from June 24 to July 31. Featuring twelve productions and two reading festivals, Powerhouse provides established and emerging artists alike the opportunity to develop and produce new works for theater and film away from the eyes of critics. It perennially attracts A-list talent (past participants have included Steve Martin, Mia Farrow, and Julianna Margulies), and invites 40 theater students from around the world to join its Apprentice Company.

The eight-week program is a chance for artists to “hone their craft and find their own unique voice,” says producing director Ed Cheetham. At Powerhouse, he adds, artists and audiences both are eager to “enjoy and experience our new works for theater, many seeing the light of day for the first time on Vassar’s stages.”

This year’s season will include the talents of Emmy Award winner Patricia Wettig (thirtysomething, Prison Break) along with Tony Award nominees Sam Buntrock (director, “Sunday in the Park with George”), Moisés Kaufman (director, “33 Variations”), and Marin Ireland (“reasons to be pretty”). Powerhouse will also feature the work of David Solomon ’99 (writer, “Margaret & Craig”), Jen Wineman ’00 (director, “Playground: The Hallie Flanagan Project”), and Conrad Schott ’11 and Matt Bourne ’11 as apprentices.  Moreover, a special musical presentation on July 17 will star Billboard 200 artist Dar Williams, the daughter and granddaughter of Vassar alums.

Since its inception in 1985, the Powerhouse Theater has entertained over 200,000 theatergoers and included more than 2,000 artists. A variety of season subscription and single-show ticket options are available online via powerhouse.vassar.edu as well as by phone (845.437.5907, beginning June 8). Single ticket prices range from free to $35 per seat.

Alumnae/i are eligible for a 15% discount on individual ticket prices (available online only, using code ALUM15). This offer cannot be combined with any other discount. —Seth Warner ’14
